Paul Smith’s College Student Athletes Compete in World University Games: Experience on the World Stage Solidifies Paul Smith’s Position as a Leader in Nordic Competition

Lake Placid, NY—Four Paul Smith’s College student athletes successfully competed at the recent 2023 FISU World University Games.  Dolcie Tanguay and Nathan Livingood participated in Biathlon, while Aidan Ripp and Timothy Ziegler participated in Nordic Combined—all representing Team USA. Paul Smith’s College head Nordic Skiing coach, Matthew Dougherty, was named to the coaching staff for U.S. Biathlon.

At the games, Aidan Ripp placed fourth place in the Team Sprint event.  Although Ripp landed just off the medal podium in Skiing for Team USA II, he and partner Henry Johnstone’s strong finish was a major reason why Team USA I were able to capture the gold medal in the event.

“Competing in the World University Games was a really special experience – to be able to compete at such a high caliber event so close to home,” said Paul Smith’s College Student Athlete Aidan Ripp.  “This has been a blast for me and my teammates at Paul Smith’s College and I’m hoping for more good times skiing with them this season.”

Ripp also helped USA teammates Niklas Malacinski and Evan Nichols to silver and bronze in the Individual Mass Start, pacing the field in the Cross-Country ski portion of the event.  Paul Smith’s Timothy “Timo” Ziegler participated in the events with Ripp, skiing and jumping in the Individual Gunderson and the Individual Mass Start.

Nathan Livingood and Dolcie Tanguay represented Team USA in Biathlon, skiing and shooting against a stacked international field.  When asked about the competition, Tanguay reflected on the size and scope of the games.  “I had a great experience at the World University Games competing with people from all over the world. The Opening Ceremony was the most special part for me personally.  I got to walk into the arena beside two of my best friends, Aidan and Timo and see hundreds of athletes taking in the moment like we were,” said Student Athlete, Dolcie Tanguay.  “The high level of competition was different than any other races I’ve been in, but I enjoyed putting my skills to the test.”

Paul Smith’s College Nordic Coach Matt Dougherty had nothing but praise for his skiers.  “What a tremendous two weeks for our athletes competing at the World University Games.  It’s a huge accomplishment to be named to represent your country and college at such a prestigious event,” said Paul Smith’s College and Team USA coach Math Dougherty.

The future of Nordic skiing at Paul Smith’s College looks bright considering the world class athletes and exceptional students.  The opportunity to compete for the United States while also getting their degree is a major factor in the success of the program.

“I am happy that Paul Smith’s College has developed this unique program for athletes who before this had two choices, pursue their sport, or pursue their degree – that is a stark choice.  Now our students can do both at Paul Smith’s College,” said Interim President Dan Kelting.

Regardless of where they finished or what they accomplished, these athletes represented both Paul Smith’s College and the United States with integrity, pride, and a whole lot of character.  The “Smitty Spirit” is exemplified in each of them as they showed the international community and the world what it takes to be a Paul Smith’s College Bobcat.
