What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)? And why do we care?

The ADA was intended to create genuine equality, fairness and respect among all people. Before it passed, our society treated people with disabilities in ways we would be ashamed of today. For the past 25 years, the disabled community has spoken out about themselves and what should be done to stop discrimination. Disability is not a deficiency or abnormality. People with disabilities have the right to govern their lives and have equal access to the same opportunities and spaces as typical people. The disabled community was so successful helping society to shift their attitudes toward disability that new legislation passed in 1990: the ADA.

We want all students to understand what the ADA is! Therefore, we are planning a fun time, for anyone who wishes to participate.

Join us on Tuesday night, Oct 27th, to watch the movie, Music Within, in the dining hall. This movie reveals how, before the ADA was passed, many people with disabilities were often made fun of and excluded.

Then, on October 28th from 4:00-6:00 on the Great Lawn: a party! There will be a DJ, popcorn, and a raffle to celebrate this great legislative action.

Raffle tickets do not cost money! Answer questions about the movie, and the ADA, and get raffle tickets for fabulous prizes! YOU COULD WIN:
