Hi All! My name is Forrest Walker; I am in the Forest Technology program, and in my sophomore year at Paul Smith’s College.
I grew up in a very talented family. One of my family’s talents is playing music for contra dances, square dances, and circle dances. When I came to Paul Smith’s, I was not sure if there was going to be much in the way of playing musical instruments. Fortunately, I have made many good friends who also have a passion for music, and I have found many opportunities to share my music.
One of these opportunities is the Open Mic Night, which is held every two weeks on Thursday nights starting at 9:00pm in the 24-hour room. This has helped me get through the tougher moments, and has made a big impact in my time here thus far. But ever since I arrived here last year in August, I have been thinking it would be great to have my family come up and play a dance for the whole campus and surrounding communities.
Finally, this is going to happen next week! So…
Come one, come all, to the Fun-gi Dance & Costume Party on Saturday, October 3rd in the Forestry Club Cabin on campus starting at 8:00pm!
My mom and dad (Jeff and Kathy Walker) have been playing for dancers throughout New York and New England for over 30 years. Dudley Laufman has said that Kathy’s fiddle playing epitomizes the “Hudson Valley style,” and Jeff’s guitar playing, along with his clear instructions and fun circle, square, and contra dances, are favorites of dancers everywhere. Their children add a variety of instruments to the sound of the band including: penny whistle, drums, cello, accordion, flute, and bagpipes.
Jeff Walker, Kathy Walker, Forrest Walker, Rachel Walker, and Hannah Walker will be playing a Contra Dance Party on Saturday, October 3rd in the Forestry Club Cabin on campus, starting at 8:00pm. All dance figures and dances are taught; all you need to know is your right from your left, and have the ability to follow instructions. The music that accompanies the dances is fun and lively! All are invited to attend this event, and it is free! Hope to see you all there!
